Ohio is set to permanently ban synthetic kratom as early as May 14, while leaving natural kratom products legal for now. A state legislative panel on April 13 approved an Ohio Board of Pharmacy rule that replaces a temporary ban in place since December. The rule targets chemically modified mitragynine-related compounds, often sold in gas stations and vape shops, which officials say pose the most immediate public health risk.
Governor Mike DeWine had previously urged regulators to treat both natural and synthetic kratom as illegal drugs. Lawmakers are separately advancing a bill to regulate natural kratom, keeping that debate alive.
