Federal drug authorities have moved to crack down on a potent kratom-derived compound after a spate of warnings and deaths in California. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has filed a notice of intent to temporarily place synthetic 7-hydroxymitragynine, known as 7-OH, and three related substances into Schedule I, effectively banning their manufacture, sale and possession nationwide once the order takes effect.
The ban targets highly concentrated synthetic formulations and does not apply to trace amounts naturally present in botanical kratom. For more details, see the original USA Today report.
