Survey Shows Kratom Use Motivations Go Beyond Self-Treatment

A recent study published in the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse highlights the expanding motivations behind kratom use in the United States, revealing a diverse group of users who value its benefits for daily wellness and quality of life enhancement. Surveying 129 current and former users, researchers found that 66.7% used kratom to improve overall well-being, while many also used it to self-treat issues like anxiety, low energy, and pain. More than half reported discovering kratom after 2015, and nearly half consider it among their preferred substances. Users ranked kratom highly for recreation, relaxation, energy, and perceived safety compared to other substances. The findings, available in full from the National Institutes of Health here, suggest kratom’s appeal is broadening, with motivations stretching beyond treatment into everyday wellness and lifestyle pursuits.
