Kratom in Southeast Asia: A Comprehensive Review of Changing Trends

A recent study published in the Wiley Online Library provides a detailed analysis of the evolving use of kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) in Southeast Asia. This comprehensive review, based on 25 articles, reveals the traditional and emerging trends in kratom consumption in this region.

Historically, kratom has been a staple in rural Southeast Asian communities, valued for its medicinal properties and as a fatigue combatant for labor-intensive work. It’s also a popular social drink among men and plays a role in village religious ceremonies. Women use it as a household remedy for common ailments, while men consume it to enhance work productivity.

However, recent trends indicate a shift. In rural areas, kratom is being used to alleviate opioid withdrawal, while urban youths are creating adulterated kratom cocktails for euphoria. This shift raises concerns about the potential health risks and the need for more scientific research into kratom’s effects and benefits.

The study underscores the importance of objective trials to validate the self-reported benefits of kratom and calls for more scientific investigations to understand its therapeutic potential fully. As kratom use evolves, the study highlights the need for a balanced approach in understanding and regulating this traditional plant.
