South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has officially signed House Bill 1056 into law, introducing comprehensive regulations on kratom products across the state. The bill, which passed both the House and Senate unanimously, aims to ensure consumer safety by limiting the concentration of 7-hydroxymitragynine, a key alkaloid in kratom, to no more than 2%. It also bans synthetic derivatives and mandates detailed labeling, including alkaloid content and warnings for pregnant or nursing women.
Violations of the law will be treated as Class 2 misdemeanors. With this move, South Dakota joins other states in regulating kratom, a Southeast Asian plant often used for its stimulant and pain-relieving properties.
