Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a rare tree from Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, belonging to the same genus as coffee. In Southeast Asia, the fresh leaves are commonly chewed (most often on an ongoing basis) by workers for a stimulating effect and less fatigue. Elsewhere, the dried leaves are usually brewed as tea or extracted with water, which is then evaporated into a gum suitable for consumption. It acts like an energy drink. Kratom powder is also popular, which is simply mixed with water or some kind of smoothie, and also taken in capsules. Kratom usually works within an hour and lasts for two to four hours. The rarest method of use is smoking, in which case the effect is the worst.
Kratom was first described by the Dutch botanist Pieter Korthals. The properties of kratom have long been recognized in the region of its growth, and now they have become known in other parts of the world.
