Recent research from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand has shed light on the medicinal benefits of kratom (Mitragyna speciosa), a plant deeply rooted in Thai traditional medicine. Dr. Thongchai Sooksawate, a lecturer at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, emphasizes kratom’s potential as a natural analgesic, anti-inflammatory agent, and detoxification aid for substance addiction.
Following kratom’s legalization in Thailand, researchers have been able to explore its active compound, mitragynine, which exhibits pain-relieving effects comparable to some synthetic drugs. Additionally, kratom may aid in managing withdrawal symptoms from narcotics like methamphetamine and morphine. However, Dr. Thongchai warns of potential risks, including misuse and addiction, and advocates for responsible use under medical guidance.
This research underscores the need for further studies to harness kratom’s benefits while addressing safety concerns. For more details on this study, visit Times Higher Education.
