Starting July 1, Mississippi will prohibit the sale of kratom to anyone under 21, joining over 30 counties and cities in the state that have already restricted or banned the product. The new law also targets synthetic kratom products, specifically those containing high levels of 7-hydroxymitragynine, a potent chemical found in some extracts. Retailers like Bay Tobacco and Beer say they already follow similar policies, supporting the move to help young adults make safer decisions.
Kratom, a Southeast Asian plant used by an estimated 1.7 million Americans over age 12, remains unapproved by the FDA and is considered potentially addictive. With a complete kratom ban set to take effect in neighboring Louisiana, Mississippi shops are seeing increased traffic from out-of-state customers.
